Is this some sort of scam by NIkon to try to make people fork over money for more expensive cameras? Is there some way to fix the firmware of the camera to let me use this lens in A mode? My cheap old Olympus worked just fine that way. I did a bit of internet searching and this seems to be expected for this camera, but higher end Nikon cameras allow you to use A mode with a non-CPU lens? What the crap. To my shock and disappointment, when I have the camera in Aperture Priority mode it says "lens not attached" and it won't let me take a picture or automatically set the right shutter speed. I had an old Tamron adaptall lens (28mm f/2.8) inherited from my grandfather and so I bought the appropriate mount for my Nikon and gave it a whirl. I just got a Nikon D5500 to replace my old Olympus E-410.
